Jon Toro and Matt Melendrez return to the second day at the Beach Bash as quarterfinalists. Four other wrestlers are still in contention for a medal. Torrey Moreno (103), Miguel Rosales (112), Elias Rodriguez (145), and Mark Contreras (189) earned their ticket to the second day. Three condor wrestlers were still in contention but defaulted due to precautionary reasons.

Varsity and JV wrestlers get a good night sleep and report at Cal High at 6:00 am.

Matt Melendrez and Elias Rodriguez are seeded second and fifth at Edison’s Beach Bash.  Competition starts today and hopefully we return as many guys as possible for the second day of the tournament.  This will be our toughest competition so far and it would be nice to have some guys challenge themselves and have a breakthrough performance as well as having Matt and Elias improve on their seeds.

Our frosh/soph wrestlers will also see some action tomorrow at Santa Ana High School.

California High improves to 3-1 in pre season duals by defeating the visiting eagles.  This Friday and Sauturday our Condor varsity wrestlers will attend the Edison Beach Bash @ Edison High School in Huntington Beach, and our Frosh/Soph will attend Santa Ana High School Frosh/Soph tournament this Saturday @ Santa Ana High.

As expected, the three dual meets were hard fought and had pretty close outcomes.  Cal came in second behind Buena Park.  All wrestlers had a good showing and gained more mat time, which will pay off come league and CIF.  Jon Toro (119), Elias Rodriguez/Andrew Garcia (145), Matt Melendrez (152), and Mark Contreras went 3-0 earning a first place medal.  Torrey Moreno (103), Alex Gray (130), Abraham Romero (135), and Matt Morris (215) came in second.

The Quad at Western will be a nice tough challenge this tuesday.  It features the host, Western; La  Mirada; Buena Park; and Cal.  All four programs have produced State qualifiers recently.

Cal to wrestle Bell HS at home on wednesday.

A slow start of seven consecutive loses to three consecutive pins in the finals sum up today’s tournament.  In the end, everyone contributed to a 3rd place trophy. Tournament Champions: Matt Melendrez (Upper weight MVP), Elias Rodriguez, and Daniel Guzman.  Jon Toro lost a tough 3-2 decision but wrestled back to take 3rd place.  Equally impressive was the first time varsity wrestlers Torey Moreno, Abraham Romero, Miguel Maldonado and Anthony Zepeda posted victories.  Damin Maldonado also performed well winning his first match ever at 171s after two weeks of wrestling.  The team should continue to improve as the competition gets tougher.

Saturday was a day of experience and competition, condor wrestlers achieved their goal by wrestling over 45 matches. Led by Andrew Garcia, the california wrestlers competed in 5 dual meets. Bringing medals home were 112lbs Torrey Moreno & Ben Romero with 2nd, 119lbs Mike Maldonado & Anthony Zepeda 2nd, 135lbs Nick Mercado 2nd place, Andrew Garcia 1st place at 145lbs, and freshman Mark Gonzalez 2nd at 152lbs. Freshmen wrestlers getting thei first taste of action were, Alphonso Lucero, David Gallo, Juan Mendez, and Tom Landeros. Our lady condor wrestlers also competed very well: Tess Noriega, Bianca Chavez, and Amanda Mercado.
