As expected, the three dual meets were hard fought and had pretty close outcomes. Cal came in second behind Buena Park. All wrestlers had a good showing and gained more mat time, which will pay off come league and CIF. Jon Toro (119), Elias Rodriguez/Andrew Garcia (145), Matt Melendrez (152), and Mark Contreras went 3-0 earning a first place medal. Torrey Moreno (103), Alex Gray (130), Abraham Romero (135), and Matt Morris (215) came in second.

A slow start of seven consecutive loses to three consecutive pins in the finals sum up today’s tournament. In the end, everyone contributed to a 3rd place trophy. Tournament Champions: Matt Melendrez (Upper weight MVP), Elias Rodriguez, and Daniel Guzman. Jon Toro lost a tough 3-2 decision but wrestled back to take 3rd place. Equally impressive was the first time varsity wrestlers Torey Moreno, Abraham Romero, Miguel Maldonado and Anthony Zepeda posted victories. Damin Maldonado also performed well winning his first match ever at 171s after two weeks of wrestling. The team should continue to improve as the competition gets tougher.

“It’s a long season” “It’s a short season” were two ways that the season was described at practice a few weeks ago in order to get you mentally prepared for the wrestling season. As I reflected a bit on this, I would like to offer a different way of describing it. First, I would like to get the emotion out of describing our season. “It’s a short season” could lead to various anxiety provoking thoughts such as “I don’t have enough time to get better and be a CIF champion”. “It’s a long season” could lead to frustration with thoughts like “This hard training, weight cutting, and tournaments seem like they will never end”. Both could potentially lead you to underperform on the mat either by not trying hard enough because of lack of motivation or burnout.
Describing the season with facts and staying with the facts will take the emotion out and help you stay focused in your training and at tournaments. Doing this will increase the probability of you having a good performance. So varsity wrestlers, reframe this as: “the season is three months long” (from Los Osos tournament to State). Basically, I want you to take the judgment out of the way you define the season, practice, weight cutting, etc. Another way of describing the season is to focus on the “here and now” and not on how long it has been or how many more weeks there are left. In other words, the season is “right now” “just this moment”.
Come to Wednesday evening practice, as I will lead an experiential exercise that will help you understand the above concepts through experience and answer any questions on this post.

The Cal Wrestling Family came together this past Saturday as alumni, former parents, current wrestlers, parents and coaches came to pay respect and remember one of our own, Eddie Brown. Twenty-six humble alumni competed to honor Eddie with his parents’ and sisters’ presence sitting in the stands where they once sat for four years. The wrestlers’ atrophying high school bodies were not a concern as they were gracious in putting up a good show for a good-sized crowd. There were many exciting matches and the highly anticipated match between Ben and Scire was as good as advertised. We hope to continue to grow as a family and see more alumni at next year’s event (33 attended this year). The Eddie Brown alumni duals will continue to be held annually on the Saturday before thanksgiving.
