RECAP OF GIRLS CIF AND GIRLS STATE
Although Cal High’s boys have yet to wrestle in the CIF tournament, the girls’ season has come to a halt with the completion of girls’ CIF and girls’ State just two weeks ago.
The competition was fierce as girls from all over the southern section of California came out to the two-day regional tournament (January 22-23). Despite this, five out of five girls that Cal Hi took to CIF made it to the second day of competition. Leslie Garcia (sophomore), Chantel Ramirez (sophomore), and Maryah Meyer (senior) all wrestled tough in their respective weight classes, however, only Alyssa Garcia (sophomore) and Amanda Osborne (junior) made it to the medaling rounds. After two full days of wrestling, Alyssa Garcia placed 7th for the Southern Section of California in the 98 lb weight class and Amanda Osborne, after being knocked into the consolation bracket, wrestled her way back up to 3rd at 189 lbs.
On the following weekend (January 29-30) in Hanford, California the Girls State Championships turned out to be a test of heart more than a test of skill. Marissa Berber (senior) stepped up for the team and back onto the mat for the first time in weeks after recovering from a kidney infection to compete in the 126 lb weight class. After nearly passing out after her first match and then winning two matches to make it back to the second day, it was clear that she wasn’t going down without a fight. Three wrestlers out of six returned to the second day; it was a weekend of epic wins and close matches, and all of the girls wrestled their best matches of the season. Overall, Cal High emerged with two state placers: Alyssa Garcia placed 8th for the state at 98 lbs and Amanda Osborne also placed 8th at 189 lbs. What an accomplishment, you did an amazing job ladies!
Congratulations to all who wrestled and good luck to our boys for this weekend!!!

medaling ceremony, or Cold Stone? Cold Stone!
