These tournaments are great to obtain mat experience.  Last Saturday, we had 13 wrestlers compete at Western High School. Coming home with medals were Anthony Zepeda, Torrie Moreno, Miguel Rosales, Nick Mercado, Alyssa Garcia, and Elias Mercado. Other wrestlers winning matches were Omar Lopez (placing fourth), Arnie Orozco (open), Rogelio (Roger) Alvarez, Ray Cruz, Andrew Lira, Andres Saavedra and Benjamin Romero.

As a coach, I enjoy watching the new wrestlers compete for the first time and get rewarded for their hard work. Roger Alvarez won his first match of his career this past Saturday and Alyssa Garcia &  Elias Mercado came home with their first medal.  Good job guys keep working hard and you will be rewarded on the mat.

 Matt loses by 13-12  in his last match and places 8th.

From winning four matches as a freshman to 8th in Nationals, I’ll say that is not too bad.

Matt has exemplified the results  that hard work and confidence will lead you to.  Join me in congratulating  Matt and his Parents as this is a well deserved accomplishment.

After a great win over Alex Rodriguez by fall in 3:36, Matt comes up short loosing 2-3 to Scott Sakagushi from Clovis.

Matt is wrestling for 7th place vs Bryan  Herold from New York.

Up next a rematch from State semifinals: Scott Sakaguchi from Clovis.

Matt defeats two-time State Champion from Texas 5-2 in the 3rd round.

Fourth round (quarterfinals) loss to Michigan State Champ 7-3.

Next match will be tomorrow morning against California’s State Runner Up, Alex Rodriguez.   A win will secure a medal; a loss means “top 12 at nationals”.   I will post the result asap.
