Cal Places 7th @ CIF, Advance two to Masters

Cal had a good weekend as a team, finishing 7th at the CIF Coastal Division Championships.  Having qualified all fourteen guys to CIF made this possible as most of out guys won matches and three of our alternates contributed 12 team points.  Matt Melendrez was the highlight of the night earning his second CIF championship and an Upper Weight MVP honors.  Equally thrilling was seeing Daniel  Guzman qualify to Masters.  He advanced by winning the 5th place match ; avenging a loss to a guy he lost to on friday.  All Cal High wrestlers that did not qualify went out fighting, leaving everything on the mat, and for that we are proud of them.

Four Condor Wrestlers Return for CIF, Day Two

The day started good with Cal winning most of their first round matches.  Being in the toughest CIF was an undertaking for some condor wrestlers to advance and in the end only four guys will return for the second day.  Matt Melendrez remains in the championship rounds and will wrestle tomorrow in the semis.  Alex Gray, Jon Toro, and Daniel Guzman will all wrestle back in the consolation bracket and try to make it to Masters.  The last team results were given prior to the last round and Cal was in 8th place.

14 To compete this Friday @ CIF Individuals

Cal’s alternates were drawn into the CIF tournament, which will allow call to take a full team.  Hopefully it will allow the team to score more points and finish in the top 10. Matt Melendrez was seeded 1st and Jon Toro was seeded 6th.  It basically comes down to guys stepping up in order to make a trip to Temecula next weekend.

Visit TMI to check out all the seeds.

Cal Goes 1-1 @ CIF Duals

Cal had an outstanding first round in defeating Mission Valley’s league champions, Arroyo HS.  Condor wrestlers came out of the gate ready to wrestle en route to five consecutive pins.  Cal then added three additional pins and secured a 49-28 victory.  Unfortunately, the same intensity for the second round against North Torrance was not there and Cal was significantly outmatched.  The good news is that no one got injured and we should be prepared to compete at our best at the Individual CIF Championships this upcoming weekend at Whittier HS.
