Matt has lost his bout in round 3, he will now wrestle on the consolation round at around 7:00 pm.

After a 5- 24 record in his freshman year, Matt Melendrez underwent the expected growing pain experienced by a first year wrestler thrown into the vacant 125 varsity spot.  Last year he made a giant leap to a CIF championship and managed to win a match at Masters.  Now in his third year, he becomes Cal’s third State qualifier in four years with an opportunity to earn a state medal.   Matt (41-5) has found a way to the podium at every tournament he competed this year, including at the prestigious Five Counties tournament where he placed 8^th.   The mental toughness and physical strength displayed in each of his matches is deceiving when you look at his thin frame and unassuming demeanor.   Matt has a champion’s attitude of persevering and finding a way to come out on top on his matches; a mind-set that could come in handy at Bakersfield’s Rabobank Arena. That five-win season seems to be ages ago as Matt accomplished every Cal High wrestler’s goal of extending their season to The California State Championships weekend.

Matt advances to the semi-finals by beating the wrestler from St Bosco 10-8. He has earned a trip to the State Tournament.

Matt advances to the quartefinals by beating John Glenn 10-7.  He will face Saint John Bosco’s Mike Martinez in the quarters, which start at 11 am.  I will be leaving tomorrow morning call me or post if you want a ride.

Matt advances to round two by pinning Northview in the first round (1:15).  Matt will face John Glenn next.

Cal High will have one wrestler, Matt Melendrez,  competing at Carter High School this weekend looking for a berth to the State Championships.  This is Matt’s second trip to Masters and he is hoping to improve on his 1-2 record from last year.  I will try to post some updates reporting Matt’s progress at the tournament.
