Cal High Wrestling | We are a Brotherhood!

One placer in a Tuff’ TOC Tourney

The presence of Poway, returning state placers, and a large number of ranked southern section wrestlers made this tournament one of the toughest TOCs in recent years.  A good effort by  Cal wrestlers was not enough to overcome the challenge of placing in this tournament. However, Matt Melendrez had an outstanding performance and became the third wrestler from Cal to reach the finals in four years.  Matt advanced to the semifinals by pinning two-time TOC finalist, D. Garriot, from North Torrance. A 1-0 decision over Granada’s state qualifier, Nick Hernandez, propelled Matt into the finals.  The coaching staff took a precautinary decision over a minor injury that Matt suffered in the quarters and defaulted him in the finals.

Kevin Orense posted a 4-2 record over the weekend and was the other Cal Wrestler to come close to placing. Victories by Jonathan Toro (119), Alex Gray (125), Daniel Guzman (160) and Devin Ocampo (171) allowed Cal to finish 28th out of 94 teams. Significant absences from Cal due to vacation were felt at 103s, 130s, 189s, and HWT.

We hope to have developed more mental toughness from this tournament and gained experience to compete at CIF and beyond. Cal will wrestle at Nogales’ Super Champs tournament next week before opening league competition against Santa Fe on Jan. 10th.

Cal Medals Ten at JV Duals

Cal posted a 3-2 record at the John Glenn tournament that featured well respected wrestling programs.  The winning matches were against Edison (39-29); Mission Viejo (48-28) and the All Stars Team (52-24).  West Covina and Northview defeated Cal 30-39 and 21-50, respectively.   Condor Wrestlers that competed well were Elias Rodriguez (1st place), Andrew Garcia (2nd place), Torrey Moreno (2nd place), Miguel Rosales (2nd place), Aaron Flores (2nd place), and Frank Rodriguez (2nd place).  Overall, it was a good day for Cal due to the fact that 20 wrestlers got some mat experience.  Schools that were in the opposite bracket were Royal, Dana Hills, John Glenn, and a second Northview team.
