We have the first match lined up for this year’s (date to follow) Eddie Brown Alumni Duals; ANDY BUEHLER 04′ VS. RICHIE JUAREZ 07′.

Also, TRAVIS ABEYTA VS LEVY POCOCK tentatively agreed to a match, as long as there is not a big weight differential.

Some good match ups could be:

Sierra 03′ vs Shrek 07′

Ben Taylor vs Scire Dompe

Gogo or Foss vs. Brandon Dompe

Luna vs Josh Audelo

Chris Miller vs Alex Garcia would also be a good one.

Anyway, hopefully all you alumni can come back for that day to stay connected with the program, strive to get in shape for that day, keep Eddie’s memory alive, and have some fun.

We hope that last year’s participants return:

Red Gonsalves

Josh Audelo

How can I prevent staph or MRSA skin infections? Practice good hygiene:

  1. Keep your hands clean by washing thoroughly with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  2. Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered with a bandage until healed.
  3. Avoid contact with other people’s wounds or bandages.
  4. Avoid sharing personal items such as towels or razors

Make sure you take a shower after each wrestling practice, work outs (weights) and after tournaments.  Wrestlers do  not share gear and hygiene items. Wash clothes in hot water. (include kneepads and headgear)

Skin boils, blisters and abcesses

Staph infection and MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) are commonly visible as skin boils, blisters or pus-filled bumps. Swelling and reddening are common, and larger abscesses under the skin may form. In some cases, deeper more serious soft tissue infections such as cellulitis can occur.

The yellow or white puss inside of bumps and boils often drains on its own without being lanced. Bumps and the surrounding area are often warm to the touch and can be very tender. The infected area is often pink, red or purple in color and can be swollen and painful.

Staph infection and mrsa can show up anyplace on your body but are more common in the following specific areas:

  • Areas of clothing friction and irritation, such as the legs, buttocks and shaving areas
  • Sweaty areas like armpits, neck, face, groin and feet.
  • Deeper infections like cellulitis are most common on the arms, hands, lower legs and face.

Spider bite or MRSA?

MRSA has branched out into the general population. It often infects people without warning, and is commonly mistaken as a spider bite.

MRSA and staph infections can be easily mistaken for a brown recluse spider bite  which can have a very similar appearance on your skin. Unless you saw a spider bite you, chances are good it’s community-associated mrsa (CA-MRSA) instead.

According to Tom Frank, Pharm.D., B.C.P.S., an assistant professor of family and community medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, if you think it’s a spider bite, get a culture test because what you are seeing is probably community-acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA).

According to Frank, of all the patients who believe they have a spider bite, “77 percent of patients presenting with soft-tissue infections are showing up with MRSA on culture.”

If you believe you have a spider bite, consider visiting with your doctor or an infectious disease specialist (an I.D. doctor) to get a bacterial culture test to confirm what is causing your condition.

When to see your doctor

If your infection does not go away after a few days, if it begins spreading, or if symptoms such as pain, fever or chills develop, consider seeing your doctor as soon as possible.

The purpose of this post is two-fold; to report the untimely death of a local wrestler and to report that Cal wrestlers that attended the Lake Arrowhead camp could have been at risk of exposure to a staph infection.

It is unfortunate and sad to report that a local wrestler from Downey High School, Noah Armendariz, died from complications from a Staph infection.  Please read article for more information.

According to the article, Noah developed the staph infection shortly after returning from the Lake Arrowhead camp, which 20 of our wrestlers participated in.  It is important to consult with your medical doctor whenever you think you might have a staph infection.  Based on the time frame since camp ended, it does not appear that any Cal wrestlers contracted an infection at the camp.  Furthermore, it is not clear if Noah contracted the infection at this camp.  Also, Cal did not dual Downey HS at camp and the staff from the camp properly cleaned the mats after each wrestling session. Please keep in mind that you can be proactive in decreasing the likelihood of an infection.  However, if you think that you might have an infection, seek medical advice and contact the coaching staff immediately. Parents, please ensure that your children are aware of the risks of a staph infection and take proper measures to make sure that they do everything possible to prevent any type of skin disease.

It is unfortunate that the tragedy of a young man’s death brings to light the seriousness of staph infections  into our awareness.  The Cal High wrestling program grieves the loss of a fellow wrestler that shared the passion of our sport.  Our condolences go out to Noah’s family.

After each graduation class the program’s alumni pool increases, which opens up an opportunity for existing wrestlers to see that we are starting to develop a history and a tradition.  The coaching staff strongly believe that alumni involvement will be a key for the program to continue to evolve.  We would like to thank the alumni that have attended practice this off season.  It has been great to see as many as seven alumni in the room at different practices.

Thanks to:

Levy Pocock

Louie Audelo

Travis Abeyta

Josh Audelo

Alex Garcia

Ben Taylor

Andy Buehler

Andy Freeman

Scire Dompe

Brandon Dompe

Chris Cadena

Danny Lopez

Andres Cordova

Roy Ramirez

…and our most recent graduates: Jeremy Araiza and Kevin Orense

I have also obtained verbal commitments from Richie Juarez, Nick Patterson, Anthony Castro, and Victor Foss  :-)

Offseason practices are almost over.  Practices are consistently on wednesdays from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  You can also contact Coach Ozzie for additional practice times.

Alumni, coming to practices will allow you to stay connected with the program and it will give us a chance to know what’s new in your life (we won’t hit you up for money, not yet at least).  It will also help you stay in shape, specially if you want to wrestle in our alumni duals in the fall.  You will also get a decal for your car!
